Silk road, 2013

Title

Silk road

Materials

oil, gold leaf, and silver leaf on mahogany panel

Dimensions

100 x 100 x 5 cm

2013

This work condenses impressions from a trip through the Sahara into a continuous visual field where landscape, figures, and structures merge. The composition flows horizontally, suggesting movement rather than a fixed scene.

Gold and silver leaf generate shifting light conditions, echoing the instability of perception in the desert. From this early stage, there is also a clear interest in finishes that resemble glass or metal, achieved through thin layers of oil that build subtle transparency and reflectivity.

The piece introduces a spatial logic that continues in later work, where images function as constructed environments rather than direct representations.

We all want to know
what the hell we’re doing here.
