Esteban Huacuja (Guadalajara, 1990) is a Mexican artist and architect based in Monterrey. His practice moves between sculpture, architecture, and installation, and is driven by an ongoing inquiry into space. Rather than treating it as a given condition, he approaches it as what exists between objects, a void that often goes unnoticed yet fundamentally shapes how we perceive and inhabit the world.
From this perspective, his work considers space and time not as fixed conditions but as active phenomena that remain only partially understood. His pieces are built through the interaction of matter, light, and perception, where form emerges as a consequence of these relationships rather than as an end in itself. His practice unfolds as an evolving investigation into material configurations and their capacity to produce spatial experience. Rather than working within a fixed set of materials, he approaches each project as a system in development, where different elements enter into relation and transform one another. As a consequence of this ongoing investigation, his work produces forms of worldbuilding, in which spatial and material systems extend across multiple works rather than remaining confined to discrete objects.
In parallel, he works with drawing as a tool for thinking. His diagrams do not aim to represent images but to organize information that is later translated into three-dimensional structures, allowing him to transfer ideas across different media. His work is concerned with how these structures mediate the relationship between the body and the built environment, questioning the apparent neutrality of space and opening the possibility of understanding it as unstable and constantly shifting.
He has presented solo exhibitions such as NEXUS 33 and STVRS in Monterrey, and has participated in group exhibitions with galleries such as MAIA Contemporary and Heart Ego. He has also developed public works including Portal de Aire (2024) and Portal de Agua (2022) for Auditorio San Pedro, as well as the monumental mural Ojo de Agua (2025), created in collaboration with Ximena Subercaseaux. In 2019, he founded the independent space Gracias Arte, active until 2023, as a platform for artistic promotion and exhibition.
